Day 3. ErdeneZuu Monastery and Ulaanbaatar

Day 1. Hustai National Park and Small Gobi

My drivers and I will pick you up from your preferred location in Ulaanbaatar. Then we will start our three-day private excursion by driving to Hustain Nuruu National park where you can witness the last remaining wild horse species, Tahi. It was reintroduced to Mongolia in 1992 after disappearing in nature since 1960. It is a beautiful park that is a great haven for not only the Tahi but for Prairie dogs, Elk Deer, Corsac Fox and Grey Wolf.

It is about 120 km drive to the park which takes approximately 2 hours to drive. Upon arriving there, we will check into a small museum to learn about Prezwalski’s horse (wild horse) and other wildlife of the park. After the museum, let’s drive into the park and have a firsthand look at the wild horses and other wildlife. If you want to see them close up, then you need to put on your hiking boots. We will hike about 4-5 km (3 miles) to see them up close.

In the afternoon, we will drive to the Small Gobi ( Elsen Tasarkhai) to experience a camel ride to the sands, or we can simply take a nice stroll along Lake Tara to explore bird wildlife. We have an option of staying with Nomads or a tourist camp.

Day 2. Khogno Khan National Park and Karakorum

This morning, let’s sleep in a bit guys! I hope you will not be exhausted from yesterday’s hiking experience! This morning we will drive to the next national Park, Khugnu Khan, where we are welcomed with tall granite rocky mountains and get to visit some war fields which shaped the fate of Mongolia like the War of Jungar. Speaking of which, we get to visit two 17th century monastery ruins that were destroyed by Khan of the Jungar ,

First we will drive to ErdeneKhamba Monastery ruin; from there we will start our 2.5 hours hike to our second ruin, Old Monastery ruin; this is a 2- hour round trip. Be sure to put your hiking boots on guys! 2.5 hours of great nature hike through this rocky Khogno Khan Mountain challenges you greatly!

After a nice hike in the park, we will drive to the old capital of Mongolia, Karakorum. where we will learn about the legacy of Genghis Khan (whose actual proper spelling is Chinggis Khan), the remains of his capital and the old turtle statue. In the evening, we will visit the 3 kings statue, from where you will be able to see Orkhon Valley and Karakorum in panoramic view.

Day 3. ErdeneZuu Monastery and Ulaanbaatar

This morning, after a nice hearty breakfast, we will head to Erdene Zuu Monastery which is an Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape World Heritage Site. If we arrive there in time, we can catch the monks’ morning chant. Erdenezuu Monastery was built in 1587 on top of the old capital which was destroyed by Ming Chinese troops in previous years. King Altan used the building materials such as old tile roofs and bricks from old Karakorum to build Erdene Zuu monastery. It is the oldest remaining architecture of Mongolia. It is one of only 5 temples that escaped Russian destruction and plundering of temples.

In the 1920’s there were more than 700 temples but Russians destroyed and plundered them all. Luckily Erdene Zuu monastery escaped the destruction partially. When we finish the monastery visit, let’s see Turtle rock, which once guarded the gate to the old capital.

After this we are going to head back to Ulaanbaatar. On the way to your hotel, if you want we can make a stop at Gobi Cashmere factory store and State Department Store for shopping. You will be dropped off at your preferred location in Ulaanbaatar.
